How to Start a Travel Business

Have you heard? Travel is back – and in a big way!

Having just returned from an epic three weeks in Italy, 3Create can attest to the crowds, even during the off-season.

The time just may be right for you to act on your dream and start your own travel business. Your brain starts going a mile a minute, thinking about the amazing experiences you’re going to offer your growing set of loyal customers. But then reality sets in – where do you even start? No fear… 3Create is here to offer some quick tips that will get you started on your travel business journey.

Do your research

Target market, potential customers, the competition, and industry trends are just the beginning of your research. You’ll also need to explore company names and domains that are available.  And don’t forget about the legal and regulatory requirements for the countries where you’ll be operating.

Have a plan

It’s tempting to jump right in and start thinking about the details. But starting a company without a solid business plan may leave you flailing. Take the time to document your vision and mission, as well as your business and financial goals. These will provide the guardrails as you scale your business.

Identify your niche and the suppliers to support it

The travel industry is large, filled with some big players. Determining your niche is critical if you want to stand out from the crowd, attract loyal customers and build your expertise. Once you have established your niche, start building relationships with your suppliers, who can help get better deals for your customers or provide them with truly one-of-a-kind local experiences.

Create a marketing and messaging strategy

Word of mouth is only going to take you so far. Develop a marketing strategy that includes online and in-person interactions, as well as social media, website, flyers, etc.  This is where having an established niche and potential audience are so important. It enables targeted marketing and ensures that your marketing dollars will have the most impact.

For a resource that you will refer to time and again, create a high-level messaging strategy to be used in all your marketing collateral  (website, emails, brochures, etc.). A messaging strategy will give you brand consistency and guarantee that your customers will understand who you are and what you offer – across all your messaging channels. You’ll never be at a loss for how to talk about your company in any given situation.

Emphasize customer experience

Travel is all about creating memories so providing an exceptional customer experience is critical to your success. Map out the customer journey from their eyes as they go from discovery to post-trip. This will help you identify areas of delight and areas that need improvement.

Gather your tools

Here are just some of the day-to-day operations that will require specialized tools:

  • Website design
  • Email and other communications
  • Booking
  • Social media management
  • Marketing
  • Payment processing

Take advantage of trial periods for these apps to help you find the ones that work for you.
